Here is the first of several posts from my concert with my good friend Carrie Kirby. Some time ago, Carrie suggested I take a look at Rilke’s Stundenbuch as a possible source for texts. It is a wonderful set of poems written from the perspective of a Medieval monastic. I chose five of them for this song cycle. I am especially thankful for Dr. John Bailey and Gabriella Praetzel for corrections and suggestions to my translations.
und ich kreise jahrtausendelang;
I live my life in widening rings
that expand over all things.
I may not complete the last one,
but I will attempt it.
I circle around God, around the ancient tower,
and I circle for thousands of years:
and I still don’t know: am I a falcon, a storm,
or a great song.
You, neighbor God, if I sometimes disturb you in the long night with hard knocking, –
it is because I seldom hear you breathe and know:
You are alone in the room.
And if you need something, there is no one there to put a drink within your reach.
I am always listening. Give a small sign. I am always near.
Only a thin wall is between us,
through chance; it could be:
a call from your mouth or mine –
and it collapses without a noise or sound.
Ich glaube an Alles noch nie Gesagte.
Ich will meine frömmsten Gefühle befrein.
so ohne Zürnen und ohne Zagen;
so haben dich ja die Kinder lieb.
Mit diesem Hinfluten, mit diesem Münden
in breiten Armen ins offene Meer,
mit dieser wachsenden Widerkehr
will ich dich bekennen, will ich dich verkünden
wie keiner vorher…
I believe in everything that has never yet been said.
I will set my most faithful feelings free.
What no one has been willing to dare
will become automatic for me.
If that is presumptuous, my God, forgive.
But I merely want to say to you:
My best strength shall be like a desire,
that is without anger and without hesitation;
the way children love you.
With this flood, with this flowing
in the wide arms of the open sea,
with this expanding returning
I will acknowledge you, I will reveal you
as no one before.
IV.
dunkel and klug.
Ich will meinen Willen und will meinen Willen begleiten
die Wege zur Tat;
und will in stillen, irgendwie zögernden Zeiten,
wenn etwas naht,
unter den Wissenden sein
oder allein.
Ich will dich immer spiegeln in ganzer Gestalt,
Ich will mich entfalten.
Nirgends will ich gebogen bleiben,
I am too alone in the world, and yet not alone enough to make each hour holy.
I am to small in the world, and yet not tiny enough to stand before you as a thing, dark and clever.
I want my will, and I want to accompany my will on the way to the deed;
and I want in the still, sometimes hesitating moments,
when something draws near
to be among the wise
or alone.
I want to reflect you in your complete form,
and never be blind or too old
to carry your heavy, fluctuating image.
I want to unfurl.
Nowhere do I want to remain hidden,
for where I am hidden, I am false.
And I want my thoughts true before you.
I want to describe myself like an image that I saw,
long and closely,
like a word, that I understood,
like my daily mug,
like my mother’s face,
like a ship,
that carried me through a deadly storm.
V. Du siehst, Ich will viel
Du siehst, ich wil viel.
Vielleicht will ich Alles:
You see, I want a lot.
Perhaps, I want everything:
the darkness of each unending Fall
and the play of each sparkling ascent.
So many live and want nothing,
and are crowned with glad feelings
because of their easy judgments.
But you rejoice in each face,
that serves and thirsts.
You rejoice in all, who need you
like an instrument.
You are not yet cold, and it is not too late,
to submerge in your becoming depths,
where life is calmly revealed.
Such rich and delicious poetry set to equally rich and delicious (but "complicated") music. Beautifully performed by singer and pianist/composer.
Thanks so much, Anonymous! I really like some of your music too. We do it at my church sometimes.
