At a concert I was playing the other night, a young woman approached me to talk about composition and life as a composer. She is was full of hopefulness as she was preparing to enter her undergrad studies as a composition major. As often happens in these kinds of conversations, the conversation wound up on Beethoven Op. 2 No. 1. I said, “Oh, I made a little youtube video about the exposition that you should watch. It will help you see how composers think about musical problems.” When I went to find it on my phone, I couldn’t.

Later, I discovered it, so I decided to put it in a convenient location on the blog in order to find it again the next time a young composer wants to talk about Beethoven’s first sonata.
